Every year, as part of the IOHRM program, a new group of students is paired with an IOHRM Alumni Mentor to not only gain professional insights but also have someone they can depend on for academic guidance. More specifically, throughout the fall semester, mentors volunteer to engage in conversations with students to help them learn how to apply for jobs, refine their career objectives, and develop the skills necessary for long-term success. Similarly, these experiences offer strategies on how to effectively approach assignments, engage with professors, and address general concerns as students navigate the first few months of graduate school. By learning from their mentors’ experiences and receiving personalized guidance, students are better able to adapt to the program’s demands and ultimately set themselves up for success.
To illustrate, a recent mentee shared how the IOHRM Alumni Mentorship program played a crucial role in their professional development: “The alumni mentorship program is such a unique aspect of the IOHRM program and served to be extremely beneficial. We got real-world advice from those who are active and successful in their fields, and it helped in making both myself and my resume especially competitive for internships and job opportunities.”
Moreover, this opportunity allows mentors to give back to a program that has shaped their own professional journeys. By sharing their insights and wisdom, mentors help drive the development of upcoming professionals while also strengthening the IOHRM community, creating a cycle of support and achievement that enriches everyone involved. As one mentor notes, “The IOHRM program gave so much to me as a student, so I feel honored to be able to give back as an alumni mentor. It is a joy to be able to help guide first-year students as they navigate their journey in the program.”
