The IOHRM program is thrilled to announce the recent recognition of an outstanding achievement in workplace safety awarded to our very own Firzana Syazania for her research and practical application of behavioral insights to reduce workplace injuries. Her proposal highlights a pivotal study using logistic regression analysis, demonstrating that the implementation of behavioral observations significantly reduced workplace injuries. The impact of these findings moves us another step forward in promoting safer work environments, particularly in high-risk industries.
When asked about her research journey, Firzana expressed deep gratitude for her mentor, Dr. Tim Ludwig, whom she credits as a pivotal figure in her path into behavior analysis. Dr. Ludwig’s guidance allowed her to merge I/O Psychology with the principles of Organizational Behavior Management (OBM). The OBM network also played a crucial role by providing financial support, which was put towards travel and presentation opportunities at conferences. Firzana shares that this project allowed her to explore beyond I/O Psychology and into adjacent areas like behavior analysis, highlighting that behavioral principles from OBM can greatly enhance traditional I/O practices. Her message to others who are passionate about expanding their expertise is: “Don’t be afraid to ‘speak different languages.’ You can ‘talk’ I/O, but you can also ‘talk’ behavior analysis or management. Don’t be afraid to step out of the I/O bubble while still being rooted in the I/O foundation.”
Congratulations again to Firzana for this well-deserved award and for advancing the understanding of workplace safety through the power of behavioral science. We are excited to see what more she has to offer as she continues her journey in safety research!
