Student Spotlight: Alex Mecklenburg

Alex Mecklenburg, a second-year master's student, has carved out a unique path in Appalachian State University's Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management (IOHRM) program. We highlight Alex’s experiences and insights below.

A Leap Towards New Horizons

The Midwest had been Alex's home, but a desire for change and the pursuit of IO psychology guided her towards Appalachian State. With an undergraduate background in psychology, complemented by a business concentration and a management minor, Alex's academic interests have always been balanced between the realms of psychology and business. The IOHRM program, with its seamless integration of these disciplines, emerged as the perfect fit for her ambitions. But it wasn't just the academic allure that drew Alex in; the mountainous landscape of Boone and a love for the outdoors made the decision an easy one. Furthermore, the program's dual-degree options opened up an exciting avenue for Alex to concurrently pursue an MBA, enhancing her expertise in the business world.

HR Science

Alex's involvement in the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) team underscores her commitment to contributing meaningful research and development within the field. Starting as a member and now co-leading the team, Alex has had the opportunity to present her work at conferences, such as RCIO, a conference attended by the HR Science Team yearly. In her first year, Alex gave poster presentations and this year gave a full breakout session titled "Demystifying Generative AI: A talent professional's guide to using a new tool" alongside two of her colleagues. This experience not only enriched her professional development but also allowed her to give back to the psychology department and its students.

Growth and Community: The Core of the Experience

For Alex, the most valuable aspects of her journey in the IOHRM program have been overcoming her fear of public speaking, finding a supportive community, and experiencing unparalleled personal, professional, and academic growth. The program has offered a unique space where students share relatable challenges and achievements, fostering an environment of mutual support and understanding.

A Word of Wisdom

To those contemplating a future in IOHRM, Alex advises thorough research and open conversations with current students and alumni. This program demands dedication, but for those ready to commit, the rewards are immense.

Looking Ahead

With graduation on the horizon, Alex is set to receive her IOHRM degree in May and her MBA in August. Alex did her internship with RTX and through this relationship, she has already secured a position in their Human Resource Leadership Development Program, a testament to her hard work and the practical experience gained through the internship. During her time with RTX's Pratt and Whitney business unit, Alex engaged in high-level projects with significant implications, further solidifying her readiness for the challenges of the HR field.

Beyond Academics

When not immersed in her studies or research, Alex enjoys exploring the outdoors, reading, climbing, and engaging in a variety of games with her cohort. Recently, she has also taken up crocheting.

Alex Mecklenburg's story is a great example of how Appalachian State University's IOHRM program not only prepares students for professional excellence but also fosters personal growth and community. Her journey serves as an inspiring guide for those looking to navigate the landscapes of psychology and business.
