IOHRM takes over RCIO!

After being held virtually last year, the IOHRM graduate students and faculty, along with undergraduate members of the HR Science Research Team and various research labs, attended the annual River Cities Industrial/Organizational Psychology Conference (RCIO) held by the  University of Tennessee Chattanooga. The theme of this year’s conference was “The Changing Nature of Work”. The keynote presentation, "What happened in the past: How experience does not mean squat when it comes to adapting to the changing nature of work" was presented by our very own Dr. Shawn Bergman. The main takeaway from his presentation was to keep your ego in check, and that you must be aware of what you do and do not know in order to be open to new ideas.

In addition to the many presentations and breakout sessions, a poster session was also held in which many IOHRM students and faculty were able to show off their hard work. Specifically,

  • First-year IOHRM students Alexandra Mecklenburg and Morgan McElhaney; undergraduate researchers Aiden Powell and Leonardo Negrete-Perez; second-year IOHRM student Taylor Bott; and faculty members Dr. Shawn Bergman and Dr. Jacqui Bergman: How psychology students can solve top industry issues
  • Undergraduate researchers Mark Allen, Paige Farmer, and Abigail Branco; Second-year IOHRM student Megan Hineline; and faculty members Dr. Shawn Bergman and Dr. Jacqui Bergman: Helping Psych Students Understand Their Employable Skill Set
  • First-year IORHM students Tanner Landolt, Rylie Sant, Jacob Leslie, and Sunny Barboj; second-year IOHRM Nick Granowsky; and faculty members Dr. Yalçın Açıkgöz, Dr. Timothy Ludwig, and Dr. Shawn Bergman: The relationship between leadership engagement and  workplace incidents
  • First-year IOHRM students Rylie Sant, Tanner Landolt, Sunny Barboj, Jacob Leslie; second-year IOHRM student Nick Granowsky; and faculty members Dr. Shawn Bergman, Dr. Timothy Ludwig, and Dr. Yalçın Açıkgöz: Does safety make a difference? The impact of safety  observations on injury likelihoods
  • Undergraduate researchers Mackenzie Law, Kaitlyn Miller, and Mariana Solanilla, first-year IOHRM student Ellise Vangilder; second-year IOHRM students Luke Vavricka and Amanda Lillie; and faculty members Dr. Jack Carson, & Dr. Jim Westerman: Signal Cost and Value Alignment in Organizational Sustainability Messaging to New Hires
  • Undergraduate researchers Aspen Wood, Madison Culver, Mary Elizabeth Covington, and faculty member Dr. Yalçın Açıkgöz: Remote or in-person work: How does personality and qualifications relate to performance

As the conference was nearing its end, the poster award ceremony was held, in which the IOHRM HR Science Safety team won first prize! We’d like to congratulate Rylie Sant, Tanner Landolt, Jacob Leslie, Nick Granowsky, Dr. Shawn Bergman, Dr. Timothy Ludwig, and Dr. Yalçın Açıkgöz for their award-winning poster: "Does safety make a difference? The impact of safety observations on injury likelihoods." After all of the festivities were over, first-year IOHRM student Sunny Barboj had this to say: “This entire weekend was a huge learning opportunity. I learned a lot about the field of IO psychology, the other students, and a lot about myself as well. I can’t wait to go again next year!”

We’d like to thank all of the students who attended for their spectacular performance at the conference. A huge shoutout and thanks to the I/O Psychology program at UT Chattanooga for a great and successful conference!
