The IOHRM program held its first Advisory Board meeting for the 2015-2016 academic year on Friday, November 20th.
The IORHM program welcomed the newest board member, David Hartsoe, who is the Manager for the Global LearnCenter at CommScope Inc., in Hickory, NC.
Board member attendees included John Shave, David Hartsoe, Yvonne Hill, Phil Graham, Dave Battle, and Rich Cober. At the meeting, the board members met with Dr. Shawn Bergman, IOHRM Program Representative, and Tim Bailey, Advisory Board Chairperson. The meeting focused on the critical objectives for the upcoming year such as fostering strong business relationships to increase internship and job placements, program diversity initiatives, and the overall structure of the advisory board.
During the afternoon session, first and second year IOHRM students joined the board members for small group discussions. Discussions focused on leadership, talent development, and how current students can leverage their IOHRM background to meet current business needs. One of the team's dialogue brought up the hot topic of emotional intelligence and leadership, and how understanding others' needs and aligning your work to the organization's priorities is key when building your professional reputation. Other discussions focused on leadership development and the types of programs that companies have in place to meet their talent needs.
The IOHRM graduate students and faculty greatly appreciated the time and advice given by the Advisory Board members and are looking forward to the next meeting.
