It’s that time of the year - the first year IOHRM students are starting to receive call-backs for summer 2016 internship opportunities. While a majority of the students expect to interview with several prospects over the next couple of months, Kate Lesniak and Brooke Mitchell are both celebrating their early placements with two great companies. Kate will be interning for Travelers Insurance in Hartford, Connecticut, and Brooke will be in Athens, Georgia, for her internship with Caterpillar, Inc.
Travelers is one of the nation's largest property casualty companies. Travelers has more than 30,000 employees, 13,000 independent agents, and multiple market segments across the personal, business, financial and international insurance groups. Their “Human Resource Leadership Development Program” is a program tailored specifically to the development of future HR professionals. The areas where Kate could potentially work include: talent acquisition, employee relations, compensation, and HR generalist. The interview process was no simple feat – Kate successfully passed four rounds of interviews, the final one being with the Regional Vice President of HR, Cileste Coleman.
Caterpillar, Inc. is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. Sales and revenues in 2014 topped out at an impressive $55.184 billion. This industry leader places incredible emphasis on their sustainability practices, innovation, their global footprint, and taking care of their 132,000 employees around the globe. The manufacturing plant in Athens, Georgia, is still in the “establishment” phase of opening. Brooke’s internship will mainly focus on assisting with their staffing efforts, including their recruitment and selection processes. Additionally, she will have the opportunity to provide strategic HR input during regular meetings with the plant managers.
