Second Year IOHRM Students Present at SIOP's Annual Conference in Anaheim, California

From April 14-16, second year students Dea Kamberaj and Ryan Gillespie attended the 31st annual conference of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology in Anaheim, California. This conference allows researchers and practitioners alike to immerse themselves for a weekend in informative talks, professional development sessions, and networking opportunities regarding I-O science and practice.

Ryan Gillespie collaborated with Dr. Jacqui Bergman to create a research poster for SIOP titled “Better understanding team conflict: A new measure of task conflict.” This research presented and tested a new measure of task conflict, the Constructive Task Conflict Scale, that may assist researchers in more accurately determining levels of task conflict among work teams. Additionally, this scale may assist respondents in differentiating between functional and dysfunctional conflict.

Dea Kamberaj was a member of a panel presentation titled “Technology & Social Media in Selection.” In this panel they discussed current trends, diversity implications, and legal considerations when using social media to make hiring decisions, among other topics. She was also nominated by the IOHRM program to attend the Master’s Student Consortium, which allowed her to network with other I-O master’s students and attend practitioner focused sessions.

Ryan and Dea were able to attend many sessions focusing on the practical issues of identifying and measuring High Potential talent, leadership development, and how to build teams. While networking with other I-O professionals, many were impressed that our program has a dual focus in I-O and HR, and said that this was highly practical in the field and helps to maintain the scientist-practitioner model. Thank you, Dea and Ryan, for representing the IOHRM program and making us all proud!
