Alumnus Ryan Felty Speaks with First-Year Students about their Professional Development

The first-year students had the opportunity to talk with Ryan Felty, a graduate of the 2012 IOHRM class, during their Human Resources & Professional Issues course on Thursday, October 9th.

During the Skype call, the students were able to ask questions about the job search process, resumes, cover letters, interviews, and how to best present yourself and your skills when looking for a job or internship. Ryan also provided the first-years with some suggestions for how to take responsibility and manage their professional development. For example, Ryan suggested that students prepare answers for behavioral-based interview questions since most of the first-years students do not have much professional experience in the field. Answers to these types of questions should include a discussion of the skills they used or developed, the actions they took, and the results they achieved while working on a specific project. However, the most important advice that Ryan gave to the first-year cohort was about building relationships. It is important to build relationships with all the students and professors in the program, and to build networking relationships through online sources such as LinkedIn.

The IOHRM first-year students are very appreciative of the time and advice given by Ryan and look forward to following-up with him in the future. We also want to congratulate Ryan Felty on his new promotion to HR Analyst with Dawn Food Products, Inc.!

The IOHRM students and faculty always love hearing back from alumni. With that in mind, the IOHRM program will be having an Alumni Weekend starting on Friday, November 7th!

  • Festivities will start with a happy hour on Friday night and a tailgate on Saturday before the football game.
  • The time of the football game is still TBD, and we will be sending out more details about the time and place of happy hour in the coming weeks.

App State football is in a new conference this year so you will not want to miss this!  We will be playing against Louisiana Monroe.  Family is welcome at the tailgate on Saturday.
